The Spirit of Buna

Learn about Enus Coffee and the history of Ethiopian Coffee rituals.

Our Story

Coffee was discovered centuries ago in Kaffa, Ethiopia. For generations, preparing Buna has been the heartbeat of Ethiopian homes. It symbolizes friendship, hospitality, and respect.

Enus Coffee grew out of a wish to keep that warm atmosphere alive. We created a friendly place in Gresham, Oregon where neighbors, families, and friends can get away from the everyday hustle, sit down, and enjoy their coffee the way it was meant to be enjoyed—together.

Our ABOL Coffee and Latte's are:

  • Hand-roasted
  • Slowly Simmered
  • Poured with Care

If you come into our shop to enjoy the smell of our pan-roasted heirloom beans or if you order our hot drinks and snacks directly to your door, you are an honored guest.

The Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony

At a genuine Ethiopian coffee ceremony, the coffee is prepared in a traditional spherical clay pot known as a Jebena and is then served in three separate rounds. Each of these rounds has its own particular flavor, character, and cultural importance:

R

Abol (The First Round)

Bold, full-bodied, and awakened—the initial brew straight from the hot coals.

This is the purest and boldest pour. Directly from the Jebena's first simmer, Abol delivers deep richness, thick crema, and vibrant aromatic oils. It is the cup that awakens the mind and begins the conversation. (Experience this in our signature Abol 4oz and Abol Latte!)

R

Kale'i (The Second Round)

Water is added back to the Jebena to yield a softer, rounder profile with delicate fruit and floral notes.

R

Baraka (The Third Round & Blessing)

The cup of peace. The final pour represents Baraka (the spiritual blessing of gratitude, prosperity, and harmony bestowed upon everyone gathered around the table).
